PowerHousing Australia: The Housing Australia Future Fund is off to a roaring start

PowerHousing Australia welcomes Housing Australia’s release of full details of Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) Round 1 projects, which show that the HAFF is off to a strong start. The organisation congratulates all Community Housing Providers involved on making great progress towards building 13,700 social and affordable homes under Round 1 of the fund.

“The Housing Australia Future Fund is working – 358 houses are complete, more than 5400 are under construction and around 8000 are in planning stages. Community Housing Providers are racing towards project completion to get tens of thousands of Australians into the safe, secure and affordable homes they deserve.” said PowerHousing CEO Michelle Gegenhuber.

“These numbers represent an incredible start for the HAFF and we congratulate community housing providers, Housing Australia and the Government on this progress towards the planned 30,000 new social and affordable homes. Our sector is ready to build on this success and continue working together to address the catastrophic affordable housing shortfall. We are calling for the HAFF to be quadrupled to allow us to build 20,000 homes per year and create a new housing future for all Australians.”

PowerHousing’s member Community Housing Providers already offer homes to more than 150,000 Australians, providing not just shelter but also essential community support. With the right policy settings, CHPs have the capacity to deliver significantly more homes. Our sector could deliver 20,000 homes a year and really put a dent in the supply and affordability crisis that is affecting more and more Australians.

An extra 20,000 houses a year would also make substantial progress towards the goal of building 1.2 million homes over the next 5 years.

The delivery of these current projects is a testament to the effectiveness of partnerships between government, community housing providers, and the private sector.

PowerHousing Australia remains committed to working alongside the government and key stakeholders to further advance housing solutions that benefit communities. By continuing this momentum, we can secure a future where social and affordable housing is an integral part of Australia’s housing landscape, and every person in Australia has a safe and secure home.
