Following affordable housing scheme discussions in the UK, Treasurer Morrison, this week released a discussion paper on social impact investing and the development of the social impact investment market in Australia.

This discussion paper (see http://bit.ly/2kEmdmT) seeks views on a whole of government position on social impact investing including:

• the potential role of the Commonwealth Government in the social impact investing market;
• principles for social impact investing to guide Commonwealth Government involvement in the social impact investing market; and
• possible Commonwealth regulatory barriers to the growth of the market.

This consultation is the next step in implementing the Financial System Inquiry’s recommendation to explore ways to facilitate the growth of the social impact investment market.
