Cancellation of Christchurch Social Housing Transfer

In late December, New Zealand’s Labour-led Government announced the cancellation of its Social Housing Transfer Programme, which would have seen CHPs in Christchurch gain a significant number of public housing dwellings.
The previous National New Zealand Government aimed to encourage more diverse ownership of public housing. It announced at the end of 2016 that this would include transferring the ownership and management of up to 2,500 properties and tenancies owned and managed by Housing New Zealand to Christchurch CHPs.
In his media release, Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford stated that ‘the large-scale sales of state houses during a housing crisis do nothing to help house our most vulnerable people.’
